Drupal has gained popularity and recognition as an efficient CMS in quite a short span of time. Drupal project team is continuously putting efforts for making it a better platform to work with. Keeping this healthy trend, they come with the better and new versions after every 15-20 days. Drupal 7.0 is a hot topic of discussion these days. Drupal developers are very excited about the release of Drupal 7. This next version will provide users with a better experience with its new and improved features.

The features which would enhance the usability include improved support for WYSIWYG editors and time zone, adding drag and drop, availability of administrative links on each web page to edit page elements and many more. Not only this, security issues in passwords and log in options are also supposed to be fixed up. There are number of other performance improvement implementations coming in Drupal 7. These are the reasons why Drupal developers are enthusiastic about this new version.

After the release of Drupal 7.0 Alpha 6, Drupal 7 beta, the next major version of CMS, is being awaited by almost all Drupal developers and its huge user base. This is still is in developmental stages, with developers still needing to fix about 44 critical bugs before it can be released, Buytaert, Drupal founder, said. A beta version of Drupal 7 is anticipated for early August, with the general release eyed for the third quarter of this year.

Drupal 7 will add support for the Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle databases, said Buytaert. Support of these databases should make it easier for large organizations to adopt Drupal, he said. He revealed the fact that Drupal 7 will be slower than Drupal 6 but still superior and shared his opinion on open source and the upcoming cloud version of Drupal, called Drupal Gardens.

Drupal 7 will have a completely new database abstraction layer. It will be written from scratch and it actually does address a whole bunch of shortcomings with the database abstraction layer in Drupal 6. It will also allow for better scalability. In fact, it will also facilitate master/slave configurations, meaning you can load-balance your database servers much better. There’s lot more exciting coming on the way with Drupal 7…
